003 Conversation 1: Behind the Byline: A Candid Conversation on the Media
Section A: Sun., 3:00–4:00 pm, Oct. 22, 1 session

Ever wonder what it’s like to live and work in today’s time-pressured media environment?  The Princeton Adult School is highlighting two Princeton natives who have grown up in the media business to help us find out:

Jenny Carchman, an award-winning documentary film producer and director, and,

Mark Mazzetti, a Pulitzer- prize winning investigative journalist for The New York Times

Whether it be on film, in print, or digitally, finding the right story, pursuing the right leads, hitting a dead-end and restarting, and then persisting to meet deadlines is the way of life.  Jenny and Mark will tell us about some of their happier experiences, funnier experiences, and some of the disappointments that come with the job.
003 Conversation 2: Glitz, Glamour, and a Look into the Darkside: A Conversation on Celebrity
Section B: Sun., 3:00-4:00 pm, Dec. 3, 1 session

Why do we find celebrities so fascinating? Suddenly they are everywhere -- in newspapers and magazines, on TV, the internet, and most recently, social media. How does the celebrity machinery work, and what are its effects – on us, on celebrities themselves, and on our communities? What in human nature explains why we are so eager to follow their exploits? Our panel of experts will explore how one achieves celebrity status these days, who is actually getting rich, the real dangers of celebrity, and how it could be used for better.

Our distinguished panel includes:

Landon Jones, former editor of People magazine who coined the term “baby boomer” and author of the newly published book Celebrity Nation which reveals how our culture of celebrity shapes our politics, influences our culture and ignites our personal lives…for better or worse.

William Gleason, Hughes-Rogers Professor of English and American studies at Princeton University, author and researcher into American culture including seminars on: American Television; The Disney Industrial Complex; American Best Sellers; and, The Making of Modern Baseball.

Marilyn Marks Tal, former editor of the print and on-line Princeton Alumni Weekly (PAW) from 2002-2022. She also worked for more than 15 years as a daily newspaper reporter for the: The St. Petersburg Times, The Jerusalem Post, and The Miami Herald, on beats that ranged from economics to education.

Both Conversations will be held at Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, 1200 Stuart Road, Princeton NJ 08540.

014 Four on Jane Eyre (Virtual)   NEW!
Deborah Nord, Professor Emerita of English,
Princeton University

Mon., 7:30–8:30 pm, Oct. 30, 4 sessions
$70

Over four classes we will discuss Charlotte Brontë’s first published novel, Jane Eyre: An Autobiography (1847).  Brontë rejected the style of her predecessor Jane Austen, whose fictions she compared to “a highly cultivated garden, with neat borders and delicate flowers—but no glance of a bright vivid physiognomy—no open country—no fresh air—no blue hill—no bonny beck.”  She replaced Austen’s drawing rooms and landed estates with moors and haunted halls and gave vent to the frustrations of her circumscribed life and the passions of her nature. Jane Eyre is many things: a classic coming-of-age story, a Gothic romance, a cry against the grim opportunities for educated but poor women in the mid-nineteenth century, a tale of near-adultery, and a novel nonetheless sometimes considered a young girl’s book.  Which aspect of the novel resonates most powerfully with you? And does it strike you now as the same book you read when you were fifteen?

NOTE: For our first class, please read chapters 1 through 12.

015 The Unconventional Life and Poetry of
Emily Dickinson (In Person) PHS NEW!
Gina Holland, Wintersession lecturer at Princeton University,
educator, writer, singer, MEd, BFA
Tues., 6:00-8:00 pm, Nov. 7, 6 sessions
$150

Why does Emily Dickinson continue to mystify and ignite her readers 150 years after her death? Misunderstood and unknown in life, Dickinson is a rare female of the literary canon; referred to as the “best known female poet of all time.” Subversive to societal expectations for women in the 19th century and writing poetry unlike anyone else, Dickinson is the best evidence we have of time travel. With new discoveries, Emily’s once tragic reputation has morphed into that of a modern woman, leaving scholars to endlessly debate the nature of her work, her relationships and the spectacular story of her posthumous recognition. This six-week course will explore these topics, and students will be encouraged to write their own Dickinsonian poetry throughout.

TEXT: Quiet Fire: Emily Dickinson's Life and Poetry ISBN: ‎ 1728416345. The book can be found on Amazon (both hardcover and kindle versions) and may be available at your local library.

Naked” or “nude”? Both refer to the human form without clothing; however, “nude” carries a connotation of artistic intent and aesthetic purpose. Within the tradition of Western art, few subjects have proven more popular than the nude. Both males and females appear nude in art; however, the meaning and purpose behind representing figures without clothes differs widely from one artistic period to the next. This class will explore the evolution of the nude across time periods and genres.

018      Shakespeare’s Falstaff and Henry IV:
The “Love-Hate Triangles” of
Fathers and Sons (Virtual) NEW!
Denise Asfar, teacher of romance languages/literature
and classics; writer/reviewer/translator
for theater and music
Mon., 6:30-7:30 pm, Sept. 18, 13 sessions
(No class Sept. 25)
$165

Since Falstaff’s first appearance, in Henry IV, he’s remained among the most famous—and beloved—comic figures in English drama. Roguish father-figure to Prince Hal (future Henry V), he’s the antithesis of the kingly virtues embodied by Hal’s father, Henry. We’ll explore the tension and emotional richness in these “father-son” relationships, and enjoy what Harold Bloom called “the beauty of [Falstaff’s] laughter and vitalizing diction.” Each session focuses on an act (or part thereof), with excerpts of films and video-recorded stage performances, including Welles’s Chimes at Midnight. Following each class (gratis), there’s an optional half-hour session, when participants may perform (or just listen to) a dramatic reading from the part discussed in class.

October 10th marks the 60th anniversary of the passing of Edith Piaf, legendary chanteuse whom Marlene Dietrich called “the soul of Paris”. In this course, we celebrate Piaf’s life and music: viewing the award-winning biopic, “La Vie en Rose” (2007); and studying Piaf’s best-known songs, using bilingual (French-English) texts, to introduce (or review) basic French language skills; for more advanced students, the course offers deeper appreciation of the poetry of Piaf’s verses—most of which she wrote herself—and how they reflect various aspects of her turbulent life. Each session features classic Piaf recordings, as well as live (amateur) performances, with optional audience participation and open “micros”.

NOTE: Students who register for this course may take it in-person and/or on-line (at no extra cost to those who attend both sessions).

Metamorphoses: Toxic Masculinity or
Proto-Feminism?
(Virtual) NEW!
Wed., 6:00-7:00 pm, Oct. 25, 8 sessions
(No class Nov. 22)
$105

For millennia the female characters in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and their hapless fate when pursued—or ignored—by gods and men, have been the focus of countless works of art, music, and poetry. Are Ovid’s poems an expression of misogynist patriarchy in first-century Rome, or an archly clever indictment of it? This course explores such well-known myths as those of Daphne and Apollo, and Echo and Narcissus: For those with little or no Latin, the use of bilingual (Latin-English) texts, provided by the instructor, serve as introduction to (or review of), basic grammar and vocabulary, while offering more advanced students practice in reading authentic Latin poetry.

021 Nabucco: The Operatic Sensation That Galvanized
Verdi’s Stardom and Italy’s Nationhood
(Virtual) NEW!
Thurs., 6:00-7:00 pm, Nov. 2, 6 sessions
(No class Nov. 23)
$75

At the nadir of his professional and personal life, Giuseppe Verdi vowed to abandon opera entirely…until presented with the story of Nebuchadnezzar, the Biblical King who proclaimed himself God. Verdi’s Nabucco, an instant success, permanently established him as Italy’s preeminent composer. Its chorus of Hebrew slaves, in their struggle for freedom, resonated with sentiments of nationhood across Italy. “Viva VERDI”— acronym for Vittorio Emmanuel Re d’Italia—became the Risorgimento rallying cry. In this course, we study the opera in its historical context, as well as Verdi’s revolutionary influence on opera. Each class focuses on key arias and ensembles, using a bilingual (Italian-English) libretto, to introduce and/or reinforce basic skills in learning Italian. The instructor will host optional trips to the Met’s Sunday matinée, and local Live-in-HD screenings.

022A The Great Directors: Howard Hawks (Virtual) NEW!

a Ph.D. from New York University. He is a professor of film
studies, literature and the humanities.
Wed., 7:00–8:30 pm, Oct. 11, 6 sessions
$125

Described by one critic as "the greatest American film director who is not a household name," Howard Hawks was a master in all genres. He created the standards for screwball comedies with films like Bringing Up Baby and His Girl Friday, helped launch the gangster genre with the original Scarface, and made adventures and westerns that were considered comparable to the films of his friend John Ford. In fact, he shares the distinction with Ford for having made the most films that have been preserved in the National Film Registry. In this latest Zoom class in our Great Directors series, students will have an opportunity to learn about the career of this master filmmaker and will get to watch and discuss some of his greatest films.

The films of Alfred Hitchcock are often cited as among the greatest of all time. In this online Zoom discussion course, we will take a look at three of Hitchcock's hidden gems that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Mon., 7:00–8:30 pm, Oct. 16, 8 sessions

Put on your sleuth cap and grab your magnifying lens, it’s time to figure out who did the crime. Murder mysteries have been around since the beginning of Hollywood but have faded out over the years. Thanks in large part to franchises like Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, whodunit films have returned with a vengeance…to kill. In this class, we will examine eight murder mysteries. I will mix up genres, some will be harrowing psychological thrillers, and others will be more comedic in tone. However, every great murder mystery has wicked twists and turns.

Oscar Peterson, a professional
art director, designer/illustrator, and commissioned fine arts
painter who specializes in portraiture
Thurs., 6:00–8:00 pm, Oct. 12, 8 sessions
(No class Nov. 23)
$180

Join artist Oscar Peterson and explore pastels via a variety of approaches—with emphasis on structure, stroke, and pressure using hard and soft pastels applied on various surfaces. Demonstrations will be given as he covers how to “read” photographic reference, composition, how to render textures, and much more.
NOTE: A supply list can be found in the class details section on our website.

Suggested Pastel Materials list

Most of the following supplies may be purchased at any quality art supply store (Jerry’s, Blick, etc.).

One Set of Hard and One Set of Soft Pastels:

Hard Pastels: Prismacolor Nupastels (semi-hard) set of 24 (36, 48, or 96 is better for advanced students)

Soft Pastels: Rembrandt Soft Pastel Half-Stick Set of 30 is very limited but fine to start with.

Other: Unison, or Sennelier are also excellent soft pastels

*Larger sets are better, as smaller sets do not supply a large enough assortment of colors

*If your budget is limited, and you cannot get both hard and soft pastels, I would recommend a set of 48 Prismacolor Nupastels.

Pastel Paper/Boards

• Canson Mi-Tientes Pastel paper (19.5" × 25.5"). Select an assortment of various colors.
For example: steel grey, buff, amber, moonstone, oyster, etc. (NO BLACK, DARK BROWN, or WHITE, as they are difficult to work with).

Additional Recommended Items:

• Charcoal pencil (medium grade)

• Soft Vine Charcoal sticks

• Paper towels

• Kneaded Eraser

• Mat knife, or Single-edge razor blade

• Blending Stumps (large)

• Sanded pastel paper (Richeson, Wallis, Art Spectrum, are very high quality and are not needed for the beginner student).

• Foam core to use as a drawing board

• Binder clips (large) or Masking Tape (to attach paper to board)

Rain Date: Sun., Oct. 22
Included in the Veblens’ donation of Mercer County’s first nature preserve were two unique structures. The Veblen Cottage dates back to the late 19th century, when smallholder farmers eked out an existence on the rocky soils of the Princeton Ridge. The Veblen House is a prefab moved to Princeton from Morristown in 1931, then customized with double walls and curved paneling. This house was first owned by eccentric, wealthy Manhattanites, then bought and elaborated upon by the illustrious Veblens, who would host visits from Einstein and other colleagues.

Sat., 10:00 am–12:00 pm Oct. 28, 1 session
Rain Date: Sun., Oct. 29
The Botanical Art Garden, nicknamed the Barden, began as a jumble of fallen trees and invasive species, and has evolved into an awardwinning combination of nature and culture, with labeled native plants, art, and whimsy. Learn the improbable story of how this collaboration with nature came to be and continues to evolve.

Section C: Herrontown Woods $40

Princeton’s and Mercer County’s first dedicated nature preserve is a gem perched along the Princeton Ridge. Towering oaks and tulip trees, orchids, magnetic rocks, and the cleanest tributary of Harry’s Brook combine with a rich cultural history to make this a fascinating place to visit.

142 Navigating with Map and Compass

Mark Goldhammer, experienced hiker, backpacker, cyclist
and runner who teaches economics at Rutgers University
Sat., 9:00 am–12:00 pm, Oct. 14, 1 session; Rain date: Oct. 21
$75

This class will teach the basics of navigating in the wild using a map and compass. Students will walk with a topographic map and learn to understand the information the map contains. Participants will then learn how to use a compass to find their way, determining where they are on the map as they move about. When relying on electronics to guide one’s way in the outdoors, a person is dependent on tools with limited battery life and is less in tune with the environment.
This class, by contrast, will teach you to be more aware of your surroundings,  get where you need to be, and develop skills with which to explore the outdoors using tools that never run out of power.

NOTE: Wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear, and be prepared for uneven terrain with rocks and roots. Equipment needed: Students will be asked to bring a baseplate compass with adjustable declination. Upon registering they can be sent a photograph (instructor will provide) of an appropriate compass.

Students will have use of laminated topographic maps and wax pencils during the course. Students will meet at St. Michaels Preserve West Parking Lot, County Road 569, Hopewell, NJ 08525.

In this class, we will explain the basics of what it means to be an executor or personal representative. We will define the important terms and outline the duties and activities involved. Focusing on practical takeaways, we will identify the key documents and information that must be collected—including

175 How Best to Fund Cash Needs in Retirement
(In-Person) PHS
Howard Hook, CFP, CPA, fee-only financial planner
Darren L. Zagarola CFP, CPA, PFS fee-only financial planner
Tues., 6:30–8:30 pm, Oct. 10, 3 sessions
$100

Most people are taught to save for retirement from an early age. Saving as much as you can in tax-favored accounts has always been sound advice. However, in retirement you will be faced with more choices and less clear answers. When do I collect Social Security? What pension option should I select? Which accounts should I use to fund my cash needs? These questions are hard to answer and can impact the likelihood your money will last throughout retirement. Add in the risk of higher inflation, living longer, and higher income taxes to already confusing choices and many people are left paralyzed and make the wrong choices. Join us for our three-week course to
help you navigate through and plan for meeting your cash flow needs during retirement. Class is limited to 12 students.

Women are living longer than ever. Preparation for a successful retirement means savings for retirement while funding all other life goals (education, weddings, vacations). If you have retirement savings and are uncertain as to the next steps or if you have not started yet – this is the course for you. The seven principles will help you identify the factors that must be considered in planning for a long life as a woman, what you need to do today to fund retirement, how IRAs, 401Ks, saving accounts and financial products can be transformed into a “pension”. We will analyze the effect of taxes, social security, and medical expenses in a retirement plan and will address differences for single, married, divorced, or widowed persons. You will walk out of this class with actionable ideas. This is a women friendly class—all questions are welcome and there will be no “mansplaining “.
